BTL 10 – I. 288 : 29
29. The life of the first humans was
encapsulated in that parable, which reveals to you how man lost the paradise of
innocence in which he lived, and how he spurned a world of contemplation and
peace for a world of struggle, work, development, and merit. All of this was
part of what was to happen, in accordance with the Creator’s decrees. That
rejection was necessary so that the soul might awaken to the voice of its
conscience—which is divine light within man—and so that man might begin his
journey by earning merits, ascending from the lower plane of life to the higher
one destined for the soul by the Creator.
BTL 6 – U. 161 : 7–10
7. The beautiful parable of Paradise, of
the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, was given to the First Ones through
inspiration. It was a profound message for people of all times and all ages.
But the true meaning of that teaching was not understood by some and was
distorted by others.
8. Out of this lack of understanding arose
a dispute that divided those who have studied the divine revelations from those
who immerse themselves in nature. Thus, the struggle flared up between those
who seek Me through the Spirit and those who expect everything in a material
sense.
9. How foolish were those who held the
view that science is reprehensible in the eyes of God! I have never declared
Myself to be an adversary of science, for I am the beginning and the end of all
sciences. Yet those who made their science their law were materialists. In
their devotion to science, they forgot God, the One who created all things with
His divine wisdom.
10. What was the true meaning of that
parable I gave to the First Ones? Its meaning was explained by the divine
voice, which made itself known to man for the first time through his conscience
to warn him of the trials that life would hold in store for him. It was the
fatherly voice that said to the child with all its love: “Prepare yourselves,
watch and pray, so that you may not fall into temptation. Take heed! Awaken
your senses and faculties so that you may pass the test into which I have
placed you in the struggle of the Spirit against the flesh, in which eternal
values are to triumph over the wretchedness of the mortal body. Look at
everything that surrounds you, but tread carefully so that you do not stumble.
The body you possess—through which you perceive all these wonders and glories
of creation—is a weak creature that you must guide through the Spirit. Do not
allow it to impose its earthly desires and inclinations upon you. Teach it to
make use only of what is necessary in obedience to My law.
